Munyaradzi Found a New Home Under the Northern Lights
Munyaradzi Mazonde moved to Finland from Zimbabwe and now works as a care assistant in Tervola for the Lapland Wellbeing Services County (Lapha). How did you end up working for the Lapland Wellbeing Services County?
I live in Tervola. I’m originally from Zimbabwe and came to Finland for my studies. I started working at Lapha thanks to my internship and my interest in the healthcare field.
What kind of tasks are part of your workday?
I work in the care sector. My daily tasks include basic care for clients, assisting with everyday activities, medication administration, and supporting overall wellbeing.
What’s the best thing about Lapland? Has anything surprised you?
The peace and quiet of nature are the best things in Lapland. People’s friendliness and reliability have also made an impression. The darkness of winter and the long cold season were surprising at first.
How does Finnish work culture differ from what you were used to before?
In Finland, work life emphasizes equality, independence, and punctuality. Employees are trusted, and communication is often calm and polite.
What do you like about your hometown?
I enjoy the nature, the silence, and the safe environment. In my free time, I spend time outdoors, with my family, and study Finnish.

What tips would you give to foreigners who want to work for the Lapland Wellbeing Services County?
I recommend being open, learning Finnish, and having the courage to ask questions if something is unclear. Lapha is a great workplace where you get support and learn a lot.
